Cdre Gary Best, MSM
Chief of Staff , Guyana Defence Force.

The Guyana Defence Force (GDF) came into existence on 1965-11-01 when training began under a team of instructors from the United Kingdom. Recruits for the new Force were drawn from the British Guiana Volunteer Force (BGVF), Special Service Unit (SSU), British Guiana Police Force (BGPF) and Civilian Volunteers.

The GDF is very much an integral part of the Guyanese Nation in that it is regularly involved in community tasks, National Development and Emergency Missions whereby use is made of the resources and equipment that are at the GDF's disposal.

GDF’s ROLE IN NATIONAL YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

The GDF is committed to giving persons who recently failed the Standard Recruit Entrance Tests a second opportunity by providing them with remedial education so that they can upgrade their academic levels and gain entry into the Force.

Our investment in youth development and empowerment arose from an enlightened self-interest with the overarching principle of preventing them from involvement in crime and violence. We are currently in the process of formulating a project for youths of depressed communities providing them with technical and vocation education in their communities after school hours using either schools or community centers as places of instruction. Such a project is rooted in the belief that strategic interventions in these groups and communities can play a major role in weaning the youths away from a life of crime and criminality. This undertaking is for not only the civilian youths but also the younger soldiers and officers of the Force. Courtesy of Soldiers Newsletter , Volume 1 Issue 2; Page 2
