uniformed services in Guyana - National,
Police, Prisons, Fire Services as well as the city constabularies.
The hand of) friendship is even extended overseas to our Caribbean
brothers and from time to time they have sent their Officers, Cadets,
NCOs and Private soldiers here for training and we have sent instructors
to them to help them conduct their own training courses. From time
to time the GDF runs training camps for Cadets from the Commonwealth
Caribbean and Queen's College. Officers and soldiers have been invited
to sit on various boards such as the University of Guyana Board of
Governors, National History and /.ts Council and the Film Censors Board.
Several soldiers are chosen to represent the national teams in sporting
competitions overseas particularly in Athletics, Basketball and Rugby
and the GDF have achieved national prominence in their own right in
dominoes, cricket, football, amateur boxing and volleyball.
All of this comes from a genuine and deep seated
commitment to the country and the objectives of the government. In
the past it was "them
and us" now it is "all a'we". There is really no place or means to
record each act of public spiritedness by members of the GDF for now
it has become so widespread and common-place that it is taken for granted.
The GDF is daily becoming more and more an Army of the people, sharing
their aspirations and goals and struggling to change the system under
which we were born to a genuine socialist community.
This is not such a new policy, for these same characteristics were
envisaged and adumbrated by the Prime Minister from toe very beginning.
Only now is full expression being given to these broader aspects of
the Force's activity and new
