A soldier can take the opportunity of receiving specialist training inside
the GDF or at some Public Educational Institution to equip him with
a much needed skill. Even as a rifle soldier, he is exposed to advanced
courses in infantry subjects which prepare him for junior Command appointments.
A soldier who displays the aptitude can be selected for Officer training,
on the successful completion of which he-will be commissioned.
It is generally accepted that, given the opportunity to be properly trained, women can carry out almost any function that is now required of men. This has received palpable support in the GDF which has female representatives in every single Corps of the Force. Although they are trained in infantry duties, however, they are not yet placed in infantry units.
Women enjoy equal status to the men and compete with them on training courses and within their Corps for promotion.

Army Corps (WAC) which continues to cater for those other specialised
needs which can never be alienated from womankind.
The GDF is, in essence, a Defence Force. Guyana has no ambition for territorial expansion and the GDF is there only to preserve the little that we do have. As such it is a capable, fit and efficient armed force which can be readily mobilised and thrown into action in any part of Guyana. Various units are skilled in operating on land, sea and air; there is a parachute, amphibious and even under-water diving capability. Soldiers have been toughened through the years of operating in swamp, jungle, savannah, mountain as well as in cultivated and built up areas, in fair weather or foul, by day and by night with vigour and confidence. They are not afraid of hard-work and the interminable patrolling along the rugged border country. Never having gotten accustomed to luxury and the soft life, determination and perservance come easy. Faith in the government and confidence in the party have bred a bouyant morale which is hard to find in armies without strong political conviction and a high sense of awareness and duty to nation and community.
