The responsibility of the Defence Board does not extend to the operational use of the Force, for which use responsibility is vested in the Chief-Of-Staff subject to the general or special directions of the Minister. The Defence Board comprises six members under the chairmanship of the Prime Minister. The other five members are the Minister of Home Affairs, the Chief-Of-Staff and three other persons appointed by the Minister.

ORGANISATION

The GDF consists of a regular force and a reserve force.

DEFENCE SECRETARIAT

The overall responsibility of command is vested in the Chief-Of-Staff who controls the entire Force from his office, styled the Defence Secretariat. It is the vital link between the Defence Board and the Ministry responsible for Defence (OPM) on the one hand and the operational troops in their respective units on the other.

FORCE HEADQUARTERS

The Commander of the force is directly subordinate to the Chief-Of-Staff and, from his Headquarters he exercises day to day control of the entire logistic, administrative and fighting apparatus.

 

He has a large staff divided into General (G), Adjutant General (A), and Quartermaster General (Q) staffs on the British pattern. Directly under the supervision of his staff are two bases at Timehri and Thomas Lands and several Corps which were set up from time to time since 1966. These are:
