CHAPTER 5
THE ROLE AND STRUCTURE: 1975
13. ROLE
From its inception the GDF was expected to operate on three fronts as expressed in its role:
a. To assist in the maintenance of law and order in Guyana
b. To contribute to the life of the country by organising voluntary service, engaging in engineering and other projects and providing a labour/rescue organisation in an emergency.
c. To maintain the integrity of the Borders of Guyana and define aggression.
Thus, it can be seen that the peace-keeping, development and Defence tasks were the leading factors determining the shape of the organisation structure. The primary tasks as stated in the Defence Act were "Defence and the maintenance of order" and to those have been added the task of contributing to national development.
