THE NEW ROAD

One crisis was a counter-insurgency operation in a populated (though sparsely so) area, while the other had no Civilian population to consider. The lines of communication and re-supply from the GDF bases of operation were long and transport was exclusively by air. In both crises, the Guyanese soldier performed splendidly without looking back over his shoulder. The lessons brought out, covered every aspect of the total military operation from reconnaissance to reorganisation.
The training of the Guyanese soldier had to be thorough and broad based - he must be equally capable of performing in conventional, Internal Security or Counter Insurgency Warfare anywhere in Guyana. Tactics had to be adapted to air-mobility; training at all levels should include all branches of staff and all arms of the service. Other lessons learnt helped to identify areas in which specialised arms could co-operate with infantry units and demonstrated how every piece of equipment from weapon, to boots was capable of functioning under the pressure of operations.
