penetrated every region of this country and in some places come into daily contact with these villages; we must use these opportunities to educate them about political ideas. We -must take books, posters and films into difficult areas and discuss the thoughts and-practice of Co-operativism. Even in villages along the coast and the more accessible rivers, section and platoon leaders must distribute government literature, hold lectures to explain government policy and meet the people at the humblest levels and work with them. A great thrust must be made in the direction of educating all Guyanese people with the ideas that current in the capital and other towns with a view to consolidating the ideological unity of our efforts. We must educate ourselves and educate the people. Having been trained in a disciplined force, learnt the laws of warfare, and developed a commitment to co-operativism and National Development, officers and men of the GDF, at the end of their military service must involve themselves in the work of Community Development and agricultural co-operatives in the interior. In this respect we must initiate the formation of co-operatives which are willing to settle in remote areas of our frontiers and use our knowledge and organisational skill to streamline the administration of these units. These groups must be organised both for production
and for National Defence. Even during our regular service, commanders operating close to co-operatives must visit them regularly, discuss their problems and give all possible guidance and assistance to their efforts. To carry out these five tasks properly we must work hard and resolutely and resist our historical enemies by the following means:
(a) Repudiating the doctrines of capitalism, self-indulgence and economic oppression and proclaiming co-operative socialism.
(b) Uniting the officers and then of the GDF with the broad masses of people of Guyana so that we become a genuine People's Army.
(c) Supporting the government to the end and implementing their policies un-hestitatingly.
Without the Guyana Defence Force the people of Guyana will be left exposed to the on-slaught of foreign predators, local exploitative organisations and subversion. Without the support of the Guyanese People the GDF will perish. We have a sacred duty to perform in this country. We must be a People's Army!
