FOREWORD

The New Road - a short history of the establishment of the Guyana Defence Force, tracing its path along the road to the present day concept of a `People's Army' - A People's Army in a changing society, a People's Army at one with the socialist ideals of the Government, has been put together quite competently, and the author I know, has spared no pains in painting a picture free from any elaborate trimmings. He has told it as it is; and I expect anyone who reads this history, and I hope that the majority will, must appreciate the problems and the aches and pains of growing in a Society that has yet to shake off the shackles of Colonialism and the traditions of Colonial Armies. Today, we have gone a long way; we have travelled the road towards the achievement of our goals, and the development goals of our Government. I congratulate my comrade, on a history well put together, and as this Country's history is written, I hope that a second Chapter will be written in our annals to show that the People's Army among all other Armies, is at one with and is dedicated to the service of GUYANA.
